Meal Replacement Shakes
intelligent_rub7381Aug 3, 8:11 PM
Hello all! My dad, 60, is going through some health issues recently and eating solid foods is causing him pain. He is seeing a doctor, but I am looking for some meal replacement shakes that are actually good for the body 🙂. Im not too worried about price , as I want him to actually maintain or gain weight rather than lose! but if its a good price I wouldnt argue. thanks.

Request a review by a nutritionist.

My dad got some prescribed by a doctor. I wouldn‘t trust the commercial ones to be that good or efficient tbh

how active is he? id almost wonder if making them with a blender with whole foods is your best option

I’d check out clear protein powder! I’m a strength trainer and I could NEVER get in enough grams of protein with those nasty chocolate banana Oreo peanut butter explosion flavored crap they have all over the shelves 😂 I am somehow WAY late to the clear protein party but it is SO good! I get mine from Walmart but Target has some too that I’ll be trying next as they seem to have more flavors. I add those electrolyte drops for an extra extra boost too!

If you need something quick, I would check out Soylent. It was made to be a meal replacement. Definitely talk to a nutritionist though if it's a long-term thing.

My dad was really struggling with losing too much weight and his nutritionist recommended Resource 2.0 shakes.

Clear the brand or just clear powder?

I have the Clear Protein (from Walmart) brand currently and it’s dragon fruit which I didn’t think I’d like but it’s delish! The next brand I plan on buying from Target is Oath as there’s a tropical version that I think I’d like!

Consider making protein smoothies

Ghost brand. Their orange creamsicle is so good!

Premier Protein shakes. I'm a bariatric patient and lived off of these pre and post surgery. Still buy and supplement daily with this. I love the vanilla. On any shakes that you choose, make sure you watch the sugar, and the calories too. Some of these are better than others. You want high protein and low sugar, and careful on the calories. I've also heard good things about these brands (but have not tried) * Fairlife (Core protein, Nutrition plan) * Ensure high protein

Yes, this was meant to actually replace meals, not just give protein and random nutrients.
amideadyetplease_3·Aug 6, 5:48 AM
Ooooo YES! Thank you for the recommendation! Have you tried any other flavors?

Kate Farms, but he really needs to discuss this with his doctor and see if he can get something prescribed.

Huel or Jimmy Joy have drinks that are complete meals.

Not in clear. I do love their nutter butter, chips ahoy, Trix (new), and Lucky Charms (new), and Cinnabon in traditional whey.
number7child·Aug 13, 2:32 AM
Fairlife shakes are delicious. They don't taste like chemicals and they have plenty of protein
amideadyetplease_4·Aug 13, 9:50 PM
Oh man. I love me some lucky charms 😂
masson34_5·Aug 13, 11:54 PM
Right kids at heart ❤️! Nutter butter and chips ahoy have cookie pieces and lucky charms has inclusions as well.

I vote this along with seeing a nutrition.
heideleeanne_3·Aug 14, 12:53 AM
I like premier shakes.

Just research protein mixes as some of them have been determined to have high lead content. My sister in law had to switch to a liquid diet and my wife just got creative with the blender and fresh produce, Greek yogurt, peanut butter etc making banger smoothies

Only two great options: * Huel * OWYN

After my dad (89yrs old) had intestinal surgery last year, they gave him Boost Breeze in the hospital. I can best describe it as cherry jello in a liquid form. It’s not thick like most other varieties. Even after they said he could have thicker shakes and some soft solid foods, he still preferred the Boost Breeze. In his words, all the others were “chalky”. Not cheap, though…think I was spending $40 for a 12 pack?
weaslelou·Aug 15, 12:59 AM
Ensure are the only ones I know of
jaxon_parker·Aug 15, 1:24 AM
HLTH Code could be worth trying it's a solid meal replacement shake developed by Dr. Ben Bikman, with a good balance of macros and micronutrients to help maintain weight.
sima228·Aug 16, 1:06 AM
You can take regular protein powder and add avocado or nut butter to it. This is the cheapest and tastiest way to gain weight on a liquid diet.

BSN Syntha6. 6 protein types and your can supplement multi vitamin.

If your dad is a patient at a local hospital, college educated nutritionists are on staff. Call them for an appointment.

I went through a period of GI issues where I couldn’t tolerate solid foods and lived off of Ensure and watery mashed potatoes. Not a great time. I tried a lot of protein shakes but Ensure were the best tasting ones. The original ones are made with real sugar rather than artificial sweeteners, which for me are easier on the stomach, and they have since come out with a line of higher protein shakes which would be beneficial. Ensure won out as far as flavor. I tried all the popular ones, and the less popular ones. Ensure just tastes like a melted milkshake. 10/10 But I would definitely talk to a nutritionist or his doctor to see what they recommend in terms of calories, etc.
