Gear
Now and Then

Recently moved my gym from a small 70 ft² corner of a two-car garage to the 300+ ft² wall of a new shop. Next: some mirrors, a custom heavy club hanger, and some cardio equipment. - REP PR-5000 93" 4-post half rack with storage wings - REP AB-4100 bench - Mix of Onnit and White Lion Athletics heavy clubs - X-Over resistance bands - REP chrome curl bar - GetRx'd WOD barbell - REP bumper plates - REP knurled fixed dumbbells - Rogue E-Coat kettlebells Current total spent: $12,596.73. Cost savings of the ($200/mo) Crossfit style gym I was considering before building a home gym, over the same time period: $10,600. This doesn't factor in extensive travel time to the gym, nor the priceless time spent as a family with kids exercising together.

Love it! Dummy question but need to confirm it since I’ve been messing with different builds online…is this clear coat or stainless?
danieltrebuchet_4·Jun 28, 12:08 PM
This is REP's clear coat. It honestly looks so much better in person. It's a work of art. I would expect the stainless to be more dull (less glossy) with a very subtle hue to it. I do wonder how it will do over time, though. I've had it 4 years in an occasionally damp garage with no problems, but I could see the untreated interior of the tubes eventually developing some patina and hopeful not any meaningful amount of rust.

I mean, it bugs me a bit because it doesn't match everything else, but those have just been cobbled together over many years from different stores. My wife uses them for her at-home exercise classes. I let it slide, though. My kids love using them, especially my toddler daughter and her pink 1 lb dumbbells.

I like the pull up bar being further out in front. I’m trying to figure out how to do something similar with my Rogue half rack.
superduper_2·Jun 28, 3:41 PM
I had it switched the other way!…glad to hear the clear coat (the one I like) is also the cheaper of the two!

Yeah, up until recently I had the bar inside the half rack, but it was just too tight and the back side of the bar was unusable because of the crossmember along the back (which I could have technically removed). I ended up with the REP multi grip bar mated to a pair of [REP pull-up bar extensions](https://repfitness.com/products/4-post-pull-up-bar-brackets?variant=52195454681454), and it is perfect. Another solution I had been considering was the [rack horns by Irwin Fitness](https://irwinfitness.ca/products/product_7cf13f06-92ba-474d-b687-70911d93243d?variant=47775398461751). They're almost 50% more expensive than the REP extensions but are probably an even better option and with the oblong holes it looks like they have, compatibility problems would almost certainly be a non-issue. With a half rack, just make sure your rack is bolted down or you at least have some extension feet of the front (like pictured) or you could have some stability problems. Between the front feet and how

Not only is that a substantial improvement, you get to do a (short) suitcase/farmers carry to get the plates to the barbell, which are 2 of my almost-every day exercises! You are missing an important extra though; FLAGS! Great gym and happy gainz
danieltrebuchet_7·Jun 29, 8:10 PM
Yeah, I haven't decided if that is a pro or con yet. It's about 48" from storage horn to barbell, which is only a couple half steps, but it's not my favorite thing. I just haven't figured out a more efficient use of my space yet to avoid it. That said, I'm not a crazy lifter, so I'm never so gassed I can't put away my weights. Worst case scenario, I could leave a loaded bar on the rack overnight and deal with it in the morning without the gym manager and other users getting upset with me...

I honestly love the look of stainless, but raw metal doesn't look as "nice" to many people as a nice clear coat finish. It just looks more polished. That said, if I were to be using some sort of trolley system on my uprights, I'd definitely go with stainless so I didn't have to worry about the clear coat getting all jacked up.

Looking at the pic I think that you might be able to move the dumbbell and KB racks up several holes and down several holes and put 1 plate pin on the inside of the rack closest to the barbell, so at least your 45's are closer. Don't know if that would make the highest shelf too high, but that depends on how tall you are (I'm 5'4" and 73, so anything too high or too heavy doesn't work well for me). If nothing else, leave the bar loaded or finish your w/o with some suitcase/farmers carries, or do a kind of front "sandbag" carry. Whatever you come up with, you've got a great gym ,so "problems" like this are pretty inconsequential!

Not a bad idea. I'll have to play around with it. My wife isn't even 5' and I have two kids under 12, so I can't get too crazy with height. Thanks!
tacanta14_3·Jul 1, 5:35 AM
You're welcome, and you could put all the heavier dumbbells and KB's on the higher shelves to keep the ones that they'll be using within reach, if that works (not meaning to insult your wife if she lifts heavy), so hope you find what works best, and these first world problems are kind of funny sometimes!
danieltrebuchet_10·Jul 1, 6:07 AM
I think the heaviest dumbbell she's ever picked up in her whole life was a 12 lb... so no offense there, haha. Definitely first world problems.
tacanta14_4·Jul 1, 6:13 AM
Hope she gets to a 15 lb one day!
